I'll be honest - I have doubts about this giving of birds as gifts.
Frankly, it's probably illegal (see also: trafficking, poaching, Queen, RSPCA).
Anyway it's just plain conspicuous consumption. Showing off, really.
Whatever happened to those simple plain gestures of olde...
like an expensive home theatre entertainment system,
a new sports car with a bow around it,
or a diamond-encrusted ring the size of a tennis ball?
... how times have changed.
